This year’s theme is Our Souls in Stillness Wait and the service will feature the All Saints' Choir, instrumentalists, and lay readers. All are welcome to attend!
The Lesson and Carols format was first created and performed in 1880 by Edward Benson, who was Bishop of Truro Cathedral in the United Kingdom and later became Archbishop of Canterbury. The service gained worldwide recognition when it was first performed by the Choir of King’s College, Cambridge, England in 1918, following the end of World War I. The new college Dean, Eric Milner-White, who had been an army chaplain in WWI, wanted a more imaginative and uplifting way to celebrate Christmas for the college and community following the horrors of war. Through the simple and timeless format of scripture readings followed by musical responses, the service is intended as a time of reflection and preparation as we await the coming of Jesus Christ.
